John Kooistra, the brains behind iPhone classics such as Blue Defense! and Blue Attack! has recently released Red Conquest!, the first RTS from his new company Cat in a Box Games. Firstly, this is a highly original RTS that is designed to work with the iPhone, and is not just a clone of real time strategy games on the PC. It has a great storyline, graphics, music, sound and the complexities of a fully featured RTS game. You take control of the Red aliens that you were always fighting against in previous games, which gives it a great Tie Fighter sequel feel as you command the invasion against Blue forces.
Controls are designed for the iPhone screen from the ground up, even multiple unit selection doesn't follow the traditional 'draw a rectangle' approach. The downside is that some of the controls are just a bit too complicated (this game would hugely benefit from a large screen mac tablet), and the game is very hard to master. Some of the ship selection is really at heart of the control issues, as the game is so fast paced in combat that you just ignore those controls and just move each ship individually. Fortunately there is an option to slow the game speed down, which helps. The tutorial is also a bit lacking, so it will take a few defeats to get the hang of the game.
Overall, it's a great move in the right direction and if you have the time and patience, you will find this a great iPhone RTS.
