If you've ever played a Heroes of Might & Magic game, you'll be familiar with Palm Heroes. The style is very similar, giving you turn-based control over fantasy heroes, their armies and castles. Palm Heroes offers a lot of depth for an iPhone game and hours upon hours of game play. As you build your army and widen your kingdom, you also increase the skills and equipment of your heroes in typical RPG form. If you are unfamiliar with the genre, it is a combination of RPG (as you level up your character) and strategy (as you build armies and battle).

The game does suffer from some drawbacks, mainly the complexity and the interface. If you haven't played a Heroes style game in a while, or never have, then you'll be a bit lost at first. There is a help menu with some basic instructions but that doesn't even scratch the surface of the game controls or concepts (there is a full manual on the Palm Heroes website). Hopefully a full tutorial will be added into the game one day to make it a bit easier to figure out. The controls are also problematic, it is difficult to move your character or to know what objects you can interact with on the map (hint: make sure you zoom in all the way on the map when moving around). These issues could be fixed though, which would make the experience as rich as the stories and depth of the game.

If you're a fan of the original games (and remember how to play) then you'll get a lot out of Palm Heroes.

PROS CONS
  • Great RPG stories
  • Depth of content
  • Hours of game play
  • Challenging strategy and battles
  • Lacking proper tutorial
  • Difficult to learn, need to read manual
  • Movement is difficult, UI complicated
